2013
Bio:
I was born and raised in Ashland, Oregon and received my BA in English and Journalism from the University of Oregon, where I also earned a MFA in nonfiction (literary journalism) with Jon Franklin. I was a reporter at the Akron Beacon Journal for 15 years before I was accepted into the 30th class of the Knight Science Journalism Fellowship (2012-2013) to research the biological origins of human teaching. After the fellowship, my family returned to our native Pacific Northwest. I worked for The Seattle Times on a contract as one of two main writers for the Education Lab project, in partnership with the Solutions Journalism Network with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. That contract ended in the 2016 and I've since been working on a nonfiction book about the new science of teaching based on research I began during my fellowship year.
