Washington Post’s Maggie Fox on Irvine, CA’s company’s claim to have made potent stem cells from human testis germ cells. Pretty sensational, if proven. As reporter Fox notes in her second sentence, the work comes with no evidence of peer review to accompany its presentation at a recent meeting in Spain and one last year in Japan. The exuberant release raises a shiver of suspicion with its unequivocal assertion to have “successfully developed the first human adult therapeutic germ stem cell.” For one thing, what is the difference between developing something, and successfully developing it, other than a superfluous adverb? There appear to be too many drum rolls in this announcement.
