Scientific studies of the hallucinatory and other mind-altering properties of psilocybin show it does greatly alter perception and often triggers a sense of mystical or spiritual revelation, just as traditional users of the mushroom extract in Mexico and Central America have said for generations. That’s the gist of a report by Johns Hopkins docs in the journal Psychopharmacology. The Post’s David Brown writes that two thirds of the middle-aged people who tried it in a test said they had a mystical experience, with many rating it the most significant such episode in their lives. The story quotes experts as being excited over the results, but careful to discourage casual or recreational use of such a powerful and unpredictable drug.
