California may have the most aggressive policies in the nation to put the brakes on its emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, but there is not much detail on how to pay for at least some of it, report Bee staff writers Chris Bowman and Edie Lau. Specifically, they report, Gov. Schwarzenegger has said a loud NO to a gas tax to help pay for a plan to cut CO2 emissions from vehicles, but many economists say there aren’t many alternatives to some kind of new tax. A few critics grumble that Schwarzenegger talks green, but is dropping the ball by refusing to put any of the taxpayers’ green ($$$) on the line. The story’s kicker has Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory climate scientist Benjamin Santer saying time is running short and that someday, “I’d hate for them to ask us the question, ‘Why didn’t you do more? You knew.’ ”
