The Bible’s Old Testament portrays Edom as a dangerous adversary to the rising kingdom of Israel. But many archeologists, reports the Times’s John Noble Wilford, have been skeptical of portrayals of old Israel and Edom as having the wherewithal for any great power rivalry, at least not by the time of King David. But now, Wilford reports, a University of California, San Diego, team is finding impressive ruins, large copperworks, and other relics of a strong, emerging, organized society as early as the 12th century BC south of the Dead Sea. That fits scriptural description of Edom as an established and powerful kingdom near Israel. Still, doubters argue on.
