Seminar: Dennis Whyte on Fusion Science and Energy

The Knight Science Journalism Program is excited to welcome Professor Dennis Whyte, Director of the MIT Plasma Science & Fusion Center and Hitachi America Professor of Engineering.

We will review the scientific basis of fusion, which has the promise of being a highly disruptive energy source for providing carbon-free, safe energy in a sustainable way. The recent breakthroughs in advancing fusion science and technology will be described, including the achievement of net scientific breakeven, high magnetic field magnets, and the SPARC demonstration project being built by Commonwealth Fusion Systems in a collaboration with MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center. We will also discuss the challenges to deploying fusion in the energy economy.
