Seminar: David Shiffman on How to Use Science Communication to Save Feared Species
April 17 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

The Knight Science Journalism program at MIT is excited to welcome David Shiffman, author, journalist, environmental consultant, for a seminar on convincing the public to care for species that cause fear.
Sharks are some of the most ecologically important, most threatened, and most misunderstood animals on Earth. The science is clear that we are in danger of losing many species to extinction and that the ecological consequences of this will be dire, but many people are terrified of sharks. How can we bridge this gap? In this lecture, ocean conservation scientist and public science engagement expert Dr. David Shiffman will present lessons learned from a career persuading the public to save sharks.
Dr. David Shiffman is an ocean conservation scientist, freelance science journalist, and author of “Why Sharks Matter.” His words have appeared in National Geographic, Scientific American, the Washington Post, nationally syndicated op-eds, and a monthly column in SCUBA Diving Magazine, and he’s been interviewed in over 300 media pieces. He’s also one of the most-followed scientists in the world on social media.
