Seminar: Competition and Entrenchment
November 8, 2022 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
KSJ is excited to welcome Dr. Johan Chu, Assistant Professor of System Dynamics at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Dr. Chu’s research examines the shifting bases of social power and corporate advantage. Recently-developed technologies allow low-cost, wide-reach communication, and democratize access to global markets, knowledge, capital, and labor. How do these developments alter the dynamics of social contention and market competition? How can we create thriving, equitable communities against this backdrop?
Dr. Chu will discuss how increased competition benefits and entrenches dominants (rather than hurting them) under certain, increasingly common, conditions. For example, scientific fields ossify–become trapped in existing canon–when the number of papers published each year grows too large. In the case of K-pop, consumers’ awareness of attempts to manipulate their attention keep non-Big 3 acts from rising quickly to stardom.
