Book Talk: Felice Frankel on Phenomenal Moments: Revealing the Hidden Science Around Us

The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT is excited to welcome Felice Frankel science photographer and research scientist in MIT’s the Department of Chemical Engineering for a talk on her new book Phenomenal Moments: Revealing the Hidden Science Around Us. 

Phenomenal Moments is a joyful invitation to discover just how amazing our world truly is. Organized into five thematic sections — light and shadow, form, surfaces, traces left behind, and transformation — it makes learning about science an exciting guessing game. Close-up photos challenge readers to deduce the underlying chemical, natural, or physical processes at play, and then, with a turn of the page, the scientific explanation is revealed. Frankel’s photographs capture fleeting moments of scientific wonder—from the elegance of fluid dynamics to the intricacies of plant anatomy—turning everyday occurrences into objects of aesthetic and scientific contemplation.
