Boston Globe: Of undersea labs, and of old and moldering bones

The Monday science lineup in the Boston Globe is anchored by freelancer Felicia Mello‘s piece on the deep sea and its study. She makes it local, highlighting an East Coast Observatory to be managed largely by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute with National Science Foundation money via the Joint Oceanographic Institutions umbrella consortium. Undersea gliders, torpedo-like “Remus” bundles of sensors, and other gadgetry will provide unprecedented data on the continental shelf off the Atlantic Seaboard, it says here. The local focus makes sense, but she does nod to a parallel West Coast Observatory to be run largely by people at the University of Oregon and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography near San Diego.
