The fellowship year includes a two-day visit to the marine science labs at Woods Hole. Members of the Class of 2017-18 inspect rare books at the institutions’ library.


The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT, founded more than thirty years ago, seeks to nurture and enhance the ability of journalists from around the world to accurately document and illuminate the often complex intersection of science, technology and human culture.

It does so through an acclaimed fellowship program – which hosts ten or more journalists every academic year – and also through science-focused seminars, taught by some of the world’s leading scientists and researchers, skills-focused master classes, workshops, and publications.

KSJ was launched in 1983 under the guidance of founding director, Victor McElheny, and with the firm commitment of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to a program with the potential to play a key role in enriching public understanding of science. It is part of the university’s acclaimed Program in Science,Technology, and Society (STS) located in the MIT School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.  The KSJ vision was recognized early as an essential one in supporting and developing science journalism by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation – the program’s primary funder – as well as the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Kavli Foundation. Since it began, the program has hosted more than 300 fellows, who continue to cover science across a range of platforms in the United States, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Time, Scientific American, Science, the Associated Press, and broadcast outlets ranging from ABC News to CNN, as well as in numerous other countries. Under Deborah Blum, the fourth and the current director, the program launched a digital science magazine, Undark, in the spring of 2016 and is currently exploring other innovative ways to interact with and support the global science writing community.
