The AP's Charles Hanley, credited as a special correspondent - which usually means freelancer given frequent jobs but in this case, I was just reminded, it means senior staffer (w/Pulitzer too) - has a classic piece of science reporting from an exotic locale. It is classic in that, like most such dispatches, it provides vivid detail on smart people with government grants working very very hard in harsh conditions.
