Yet again, an instance of climate worry shows up in the business section. The Times‘s Keith Bradsher reports on a move by industrial and developing nations — an uncommon alliance in climate politics — to accelerate the phase-out of HCFC-22 and related refrigerants (themselves subs for far worse CFC’s of the 1980s ozone, Montreal Protocol wars). The Times itself reported recently the explosive growth in China and India of production of this chemical, with much of it leaking into the sky. Some of it attacks ozone. And it’s far worse, molecule for molecule, than CO2 when it comes to trapping solar energy near the ground.
